Technology is amazing! Thanks to 3D printers, we have been able to make huge leaps. You can choose to 3D print anything you want, and some medical professionals have used this technology to create a limb for those in need. It was really only a matter of time before someone decided that instead of creating just one limb, we should create an entire body.
A Chinese sex robot firm has decided that they should use this technology to make the perfect companions for people to use in the bedroom. The catch? They hope to use 3D printing in order to allow them to create dolls based on real people. What could possibly go wrong?
Speed up production
For the Chinese company DS doll, they aren’t hoping to 3D print for sinister reasons. Instead, they simply want to help speed up production. Sex dolls are in demand at the moment, because they are some of the most intriguing sex toys you can buy. With artificial intelligence in them, you can have a seemingly real relationship with your chosen doll.
By using 3D printing technology, the company hopes that they will be able to help speed up production, keeping up with the demand and ensuring customers can get the sex dolls they want.
There is also the additional benefit that 3D printing allows more customisation of the dolls. Their customers will be able to have an artificially intelligent sex robot created for them which looks like a real person. This might seem like a good idea at first, but it does also raise some concerns.
How will it work?
Sam, the marketing manager for the company, spoke in a recent interview about it to explain just how it will work. “The 3D printer is connected to a 3D scanner which can be used to scan in the body of a full person as well as prototype parts for replication”.
In other words, being able to 3D print is going to open up huge opportunities for the company. Sam goes on to explain that “this type of technology is excellent for creating new doll bodies and faces as they can be developed from a real human.”
Of course, the concern is that people can then get 3D prints for dolls based on people who are absolutely clueless about the process. 3D printing can be used to create the shell for the doll, while the individual features can then be styled based on a person. What if people use this technology for evil?
The implications behind it
The method that the company is using suggests that the person the doll is being based on will know about it. They will model for the scanner to help create the frame. However, this is just how the company is doing it. 3D printing can be done in a number of other ways.
As you can imagine, this is causing worries for some. The Professor of Ethics and Culture of Robots and AI at De Montford University, Kathleen Richardson, feels that 3D printing sex dolls could lead into a new type of revenge porn.
“We could see this as a kind of revenge porn because you could end up having your stalker or rapist or ex create a doll in the image of someone.” Richardson elaborates by stating that “this would turn it into a form of sexual harassment.”
Should we 3D print sex dolls?
I can see why the idea of using 3D printing might be appealing to the companies creating sex dolls. It will help them to base their dolls quicker and speed up production. It also means that they can customise the dolls to suit the needs of their clients, which is going to give them an edge.
However, there is then the worry that some might use the technology in a different way. Even if they didn’t, creating a sex doll of your partner isn’t going to be good if you break up. They then have a realistic doll of you that they can use for whatever they want.
