Masturbation Habits: What Are We Getting Up To?

We are all individuals. When it comes to masturbating, most of us will do different things to put ourselves in the mood. Some watch porn, others might start a dirty conversation with someone to try and turn them on too. Whatever we do, we all have unique masturbation habits.

Curious to know what exactly we all get up to when we are alone? You’re in the right place. A recent poll into our masturbation habits has some telling information for us. How do you compare to the rest of the world?

A poll by Superdrug

If you can think of a subject, the chances are that there is a poll or study out there to cover it. Masturbation is no different. In fact, a recent poll by Superdrug decided to take a look at our masturbation habits to see just how different we are when it comes to personal pleasure.

The poll looked at over 900 Europeans and Americans to find out what they get up to when they have some alone time. They were eager to find out “what people used to get in the mood”, as well as if “self-pleasure really led to better orgasms”.

We already know that masturbation is good for us. As Superdrug’s Online Doctor points out, it “may be able to prevent depression, reduce the risk of cervical and prostate cancer, and ease the pain of menstrual cramps”. This is on top of the amazing levels of pleasure we feel from it. So what can we learn about the things we do when going solo?

Masturbation: there’s a time and a place

There is always a time and a place for masturbation, though most of us will manage to find five minutes to jerk one out. During their poll, Superdrug were curious to see how much time we tend to spend masturbating. For women, we typically do it twice a week, while men go for four sessions.

Men, when masturbating, will take fourteen minutes per session to reach a conclusion. Women, on the other hand, will go for thirteen minutes. Maybe men have a better tolerance for self-pleasure, or it is a case of women being more eager to reach the height of pleasure quickly.

If you were to add up just how much time throughout the year we spend masturbating, it doesn’t sound like much. Just thirteen minutes per session twice a week for women works out at twenty seven hours jerking off. Men, on the other hand, clock in forty six hours of masturbation in a year.

You could be forgiven for believing that these hours are all spent in the comfort of our own home, but a quarter of those polled said that they had masturbated in a public space. Fifteen per cent admitted to doing it at work or at a friend’s home, with fourteen per cent option for a car. Another seven per cent even got their freak on in a private pool! Quite the masturbation achievements!

This is how we do it

We all have different methods when it comes to masturbation habits. Some like to stick to their hand, while others might use a toy. I have a small suitcase tucked underneath my bed, full of different toys I can use to get myself off.

This seems to reflect how a number of people feel about toys. While sixty per cent said that they used their hand, forty per cent admitted that toys were their go to. For men it was a different story. A whopping ninety per cent said that their hand was the way to go with just ten per cent opting for toys. Given how taboo male sex toys still are, we shouldn’t be surprised.

But what is it that puts us in the mood for pleasure? For both men and women it is overwhelmingly porn, though just how many of us turn to it is different. Sixty seven per cent of men said that porn was their preferred method, while thirty eight per cent of women used it.

While a lot of men preferred porn, more women enjoyed fantasies about their partner, erotic literature, and fantasies about strangers. Surprisingly, a number also fantasised about an ex, showing that perhaps the sex was amazing and we aren’t quite ready to move on.

Sex or masturbation?

If given the choice, most of us would opt for sex instead of masturbating. However, it seems that there are some people out there who would much rather have some time to themselves than jumping into bed with a partner.

Sixteen per cent of men and twenty four per cent of women said when polled that they preferred masturbating to sex. That’s a lot of people preferring masturbation! So what is it about our masturbation habits that makes it much more appealing to us than having sex with someone?

It seems that women and men felt that they gained more satisfaction from masturbation, with sixty six per cent of women and fifty three per cent of men stating that this was their main priority. Next came the potential for a better orgasm, although only nineteen per cent of men felt this was important as opposed to fifty six per cent of women.

Intimacy, excitement, and sensuality were other big factors, showing that, while we love sex, we often achieve much bigger and better orgasms when we have some alone time.
