All last week, the Flamefest kinky swingers event got a lot of coverage. The ‘Kinky Rave Festival’ in Kent was the home to an S&M dungeon and an “adult play area” staffed by dominatrixes. There was also live entertainment and DJ’s as well as circus performers, and workshops on everything from erotic writing and spanking to nipple tassel-making and “foot worship”. However, the fun and games have been overshadowed by the death of a man whilst another woman was found unconscious at the event.
Police and paramedics were called to the campsite in Powder Mill Lane, Tunbridge Wells, just after 6am on Tuesday.
A Unexplained Death
The man was found dead at the scene and his death is being treated as “unexplained”, police said. The woman received treatment at the scene and was later airlifted to hospital.
A Kent Police spokesman said: “Kent Police is making enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding an unexplained death in Tunbridge Wells.
“Officers were called by South East Coast Ambulance Service at 6.14am on Tuesday August 22 to a medical incident at a campsite in Powder Mill Lane, Tunbridge Wells.
“Patrols and ambulance crews went to the scene where a man was pronounced dead.
“The death is being treated as unexplained at this stage.
“In addition, an unconscious woman received medical treatment and was taken to a local hospital by air ambulance.”
Now at the time of writing there were no details in regards to caused the death and serious injury, but as they appear to have suffered on the same incident, it heavily implies that they may not have been practising safe BDSM.
The Danger of BDSM in This Kind of Environment
I obviously have no idea about this particular event but I have heard about events like it. The main drawback is that people who don’t know each other and who have not built up a level of trust start getting involved in possibly dangerous encounters. There is a huge difference between having fun with a well meaning dominatrix, and a well meaning amateur you have just met. The dominatrix is a professional, whilst you have no idea if your new friend is able to create a safe environment.
Also with this being a party venue also, have drink or drugs become involved? I am not saying it has, but BDSM can be dangerous, and that is why safety is the key. Someone getting drunk or high is not conducive to a safe environment, as if you need me to tell you that.
As I said, that is no reflection of Flamefest or the organisers. It is just that the whole set up will be more haphazard than if you turn up to an Escort Ireland dominatrix who know what to do and how to do it.
That isn’t to say events like Flamefest don’t have their merit, as there seem a lot of fun things going on, as well as workshops. Plus not all BDSM has to be high intensity dangerous stuff. There are forms of mild BDSM where you can have fun, but in a place like this, can still stay safe.
As I said before, I have no idea about how the actual set up of Flamefest was. We certainly don’t believe they had a lax attitude to safety, as it seems that ‘safe spaces’ where people engaged in the fun were monitored. However, no-one can have eyes everywhere and this could well have been the case here. I am sure they will look at what happened and learn form it, if of course the same event takes place next year.
We send our our heartfelt sympathy to the family of the dead man, and wish the woman a full and speedy recovery. A weekend of fun should never end like this.
