The President of Ireland Signs (Sexual Offences) Bill into Law

It’s been confirmed that the President of Ireland signed the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Bill 2017 on February 22nd, the law that prosecutes sex buyers in the country.

The legislation aims to provide protection for minors against grooming and child pornography, but it also aims to lower the demand for sex work. Additionally, the legislation amends the provisions on incest and indecent exposure.

Ireland’s rationalisation for criminalising the purchase of sex was based on the Nordic Model, the Sexual Offences bill that was first introduced in Norway and Sweden. Soon after, Canada, Iceland, France and Northern Ireland integrated the Nordic Model into their Sexual Offences Bill.

Earlier this month, the bill passed in the Dáil by 94 votes to 6, in which the Independent Alliance, Labour, Sinn Féin, Fianna Fáil, and Fine Gael supported the new legislation.

As of now, the Sexual Offences bill is a part of the law.
