Sometimes I read an article that makes me want to bang my head against a wall. It just pops up and smacks of such total ignorance that I actually look around the internet to see if it is some sort of wind up by a comedy site.
Sadly the latest comments by the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, in regards to homosexuality are anything but a joke. Whilst giving a detailed explanation as to why gay people should be jailed for life, he came out with these little nuggets.
Vile Statements
“That is a really serious matter. There is something really wrong with you.”
“Homosexuals are actually mercenaries. They are heterosexual people but because of money they say they are homosexuals. These are prostitutes because of money.”
“Can somebody be homosexual simply by nature? The answer is no.”
“One of the cultures that we detest is oral sex. The mouth is for picking food, not for sex. We know the address for sex. That address (the mouth) is not for sex. The mouth is for eating not for sex. The mouth is engineered for kissing.”
“No study has shown you can be homosexual by nature, that man can choose to love a man… is a matter of choice. After listening to the scientists, I got the facts.”
Then he came out with this gem
“It is not healthy. You can contract STD (sexually transmitted diseases). You push the mouth there, you can come back with worms and they enter your stomach because that is a wrong address. You can also contract Hepatitis B”
You can have worms entering your stomach as a result of oral sex? Which scientists has he been speaking to? I would hate to think these ‘scientists’ were just telling the President what he wanted to hear….
This man is an elected official, yet his comments take bigotry to a whole new level. It makes you feel so sorry for all the gay people living in Uganda today. What kind of life have they got to look forward to?
What Can Be Done?
It is very easy to excuse these countries for their bigoted beliefs due to them having different ‘cultures’, but I thing that is a cop out. True equality cannot happen unless everyone in the world benefits.
It is a very interesting time for gay and transgender rights. Whilst a lot of the world is becoming more tolerant ( see the UK allowing gay marriage), parts of the world are reacting negatively and tightening up legislation (see Russia)
The question remains, what can be done to help the gay people in these countries who are suffering from persecution?
The easy to answer is to hit them in their pocket. Stop trade agreements with them until they improve their human rights.
The problem with that is that there won’t be a shortage of countries willing to step in to fill the void. In the end you would be falling on your own sword, without any real effect.
It seems that we will just have to keep letting these countries know how much we hate their bigoted policies. Maybe it will take a while for them to move into the 21st Century, but it could happen one day..
Despite Ireland having its faults, it does make you realise that, in the end, we are quite lucky living where we do.
