I was sat at home last week watching the brilliant boxing news show Ringside. Due to being rather busy at work, I hadn’t realised they were going to be doing a full interview with Kellie Maloney. And believe me, it was seriously good viewing.
Kellie Maloney, for those who don’t know, is the new, female persona of legendary boxing promoter Frank Maloney. Kellie, as people who read the Sunday papers or who watch Celebrity Big Brother will know, admitted that she was in the process of transforming into a woman eight weeks ago. Since then, she has been everywhere, and is doing wonders for the Transsexual community.
Now the interview in itself took many forms. There was plenty of fascinating stuff regarding his time working with former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis and other aspects of his boxing career. This was truly remarkable stuff, and I could go on for hours and hours going on about what was said there.
A Relaxed Feel
What was equally as interesting was the whole relaxed feel of the interview. The presenters, Adam Smith and Johnny Nelson all know Kellie Maloney as Frank. To be fair, it wouldn’t have been too surprising to see them act a little bit shocked. I even expected them to accidentally call him Frank on at least one occasion. However, that couldn’t have been further from the truth.
All three of them, Smith, Nelson and Maloney just acted like it was the most normal thing in the world.
It did just go to show that, even in what is regarded (rightfully) as the most masculine sport around, the transgender community is becoming properly accepted in modern day society.
A Changing Society
To be fair, this has surprised a lot of people. Many would have thought that these guys, full of testosterone would have thought that what Kellie was doing with her life was pretty disgusting and weird. However, they just saw Kellie as the ‘man’ they had always known, but who was just getting his gender corrected.
