A father of three who tried to rob and threatened to rape an escort because he needed cash for Christmas, has been given a suspended sentence.
Liam McGran, 49, told the gardai he decided to attack her, as he has been with her before and knew she was small. He then threatened her in her own him with an imitation gun.

However, it seemed he picked on the wrong girl. This escort had a firearms license and was knowledgeable about guns. She spotted it was fake and fought him off, causing him to flee the apartment.
Judge Mary Ring said the offence had had a ‘serious effect on the woman’ but noted it was his ‘first offence’.
There is a mandatory minimum sentence of five years. The judge however, deviated from that because of his early guilty plea.
Upon arrival at the flat, McGran was let in the door. It was at this point he got the ‘firearm’ out, whilst demanding cash and saying he was going to rape her. During the struggle, the gun fell to the floor and broke apart.
Seems good quality.
The woman gave the gardai the phone number he had rung off, at which point they were able to trace it to a property in Lucan, where McGran was arrested,
It seems that he came clean right away, saying he needed money for the festive period, and believing he could ‘take her’ as she was small.
Well, as she managed to kick his arse, he seems to have been wrong on that point. This was acknowledged by Judge Ring who commented that she “was not as small as he thought”
She also noted that the woman had also done a self defence course, although it could be argued that she was “doing well enough without it”.
Defence Counsel Luigi Rea said he was deeply ashamed that the victim thought McGran would rape here.
He also stated that he client had no drink or drugs problem, and that his record was clean.
Counsel said McGran, who is married with three children and one grandchild, tried to call the woman later to say sorry but released this was a stupid thing to do.
Pathetically Lenient
OK, I understand that he may have no previous convictions. I will also acknowledge that he was on the arse end of arse kicking. But seriously, this sentence seems very light. You threaten to rob and rape, and you end up going home to your family? I don’t care if the guy is Santa Claus, you really shouldn’t be able to get away with this shit.
I would hate to think that he got a lighter sentence because the victim was an escort. Without casting aspersions, I wonder if he would actually have been doing time if this was a girl coming home from a nightclub?
I will just leave that one out there.
