The porn industry is really a thriving business these days. The internet has led to millions of people visiting porn sites on a daily basis. Gone are the days of having to go to the local corner shop, getting a magazine off the top shelf, plonking it on the desk, purchasing it, then running out of the shop, making a mental not to go there again for a LONG time. Now we just need to visit sites like Pornhub or Redtube, and it is all there in front of us.
However, it really can’t be argued that there in no notable Irish porn industry. On the face of it, that really doesn’t make sense. Whilst the world is kicking on (well, maybe not all the world, but you get my point), there still isn’t an Irish porn industry worthy of the name.
The question is, why is this? What is stopping a new generation of Irish porn stars making a name for themselves?
External Factors
To be fair, Ireland has its fair share of quality businessmen and women out there. If there is a chance of making money out of Irish porn, then there will be people capable of doing it.
If that is the case, then there must be issues with external factors. We therefore need to work out what these things that limit supply actually are. Why are porn companies not being set up? Are there no men and women wanting to get their pants off?
These questions are actually very difficult to answer as the answers are all pretty subjective. Unless you do a survey of business people asking why they haven’t set up a porn company, or asking women on the street whether they want to appear in a porn film, then you won’t get the answers in black and white.
However, it probably wouldn’t be that much of a stretch of the imagination to say that the issues are social. Ireland is still a very conservative country. We look at the escort industry, and see that even though the overwhelming majority of escorts are using their God given right to do what they want with their own bodies, many politicians and special interest groups want the public to think that every escort is transported across Europe, against their will, in the back of a lorry. Still, this narrative works. It is Hitler’s ‘big lie’ philosophy from Mein Kampf. Simply put, if you say tell a lie so ridiculous, then no-one will think anyone would be so mad to make it up, so it must be true.
If you are a legitimate business person, do you really want your name dragged through the mud when in-fact, you are doing nothing wrong? It is far better to set up a new haulage business, or a local shop. You can make money, and not get demonised in the Sunday World in the process.
Is it Legal?
Could the whole pornography thing be illegal in Ireland? It has to be said, we have quite strict censorship laws. Could business people be actually unable to set up an Irish porn company by statute?
Well, I have had a look, and it seems the answer is no, kind of.
Illegal acts are illegal (believe it or not) You can’t have an Irish porn film with underage people. Well, you can’t really argue with that.
Certain domain names are banned. You can’t start using Porn.ie or Pornography.ie. Ones that are “offensive or contrary to public policy or generally accepted principles of morality” are not allowed also.
Now there are rules against obscenity. Usually that refers to vile scenes like a man raping a woman, underage sex, or bestiality. However, with Ireland being a bit conservative (an understatement) could there be issues with people in authority using the obscenity laws to combat things they don’t like, like really intimate shots, such as a stretched asshole?
Now this may sound a bit weird, and it certainly isn’t my cup of tea. But it is well know that peoples tastes in porn are becoming more extreme. Would the Irish porn industry become too ‘vanilla’, and possibly too bland to make it success? Now I am not sure, as I can’t see any form of precedent in my searches, BUT it could be a reason that business men and women are shying away from taking the plunge.
Are Irish People Willing to be Porn Stars?
One question remains, are there Irish men and women willing to appear in Irish porn films?
Well, eager to find out the answer to this, Joe.ie decided to investigate.
They set up an ad on a website entitled ‘Adult Models For Film’. These models would have to be interested in shooting ‘bedroom scenes’, no experience was necessary, and the the pay was good. Of course the ad was fake, but this was all about gauging interest.
Well, it didn’t take long for them to get 30 female applicants interested in getting it on. They had varying levels of attractiveness apparently, but the supply was certainly there. There were some women from Eastern Europe willing to do it, but there were also plenty of Irish girls looking for their big break.
Although there was a stipulation that they were looking for women, eight men sent an email offering to smash hot Irish pornstars for for cash (I’m hardly surprised)
Well it didn’t take long for the unnamed website to realise this was all fake and remove it. Seemingly, the lack of an associated landline number was a giveaway. It did however go to show that there are men and women willing to appear in Irish porn films.
An industry in Waiting
In conclusion, it seems there is an Irish porn industry out there waiting to be tapped in to. However, some entrepreneur will need to take the plunge, and ignore those who may want to slaughter them.
Until then, as a nation, Ireland will always be on the demand side of the economic equation, instead of the supply side.
