also, it seems to me that there is a lot of people here who get banned. i may be wrong on that but i certainly have read about people getting banned or the threat of them getting banned alot on this site. on the few other forums i use i dont know of this being an issue. are the rules (which i haven't read) too strict? or are the rules enforced too strictly?

I accept need for rules, respect for all etc. and yes removal of text if it's in accordance with the rules.

What is frustrating is the inconsistency in the application of the rules. As Bhoywonder has shown there are many references to retard, nigger and other derogatory terms on the site, uncensored. That's a fact.

The point is this site is a club or clique for want of a better word, in that the new or occasional user generally fares worse re. reactions to comments. It's a point that has been made before on other sites and seems to come with the package so to speak. It's just how it is. Those who spend their lives here are unpoliced so to speak and can arbitrarily decide who to censure / reprimand based on their likes / dislikes.

Anyway, at this moment I'm more interested in getting a decent coffee and scone, think a cherry scone this time...

There could be quite a few reasons for the derogatory terms that Bhoywonder found loitering around the site uncensored by community mods:

1. They predate the introduction of community modding.
2. They were used in such a context as obviously not intended to give offence. Your use of some in the above quote being an example.
3. They were missed by the mods.
4. Nobody else thought to report them and bring them to the mod's attention.
5. Some of the rules are more recent and therefore only being applied since their introduction.

Now to counteract the part of your quotation that I highlighted in bold. You've been registered here for two years and have a total of 42 posts yet 21 reviews, so as you point out yourself, you are an infrequent user of the community section. It would seem that you primarily use E-I for punting purposes and read or contribute to this part of the site much less then some other members. There's nothing wrong with that; it's your prerogative.....but if you are'nt in here that often, how do know what is going on all of the time and that new or occasional users generally fare worse regarding the reaction of others to their comments. We had a case yesterday I believe, where a very new and probably inexperienced punter/member sought some advice. He was insulted without cause by another new user name (but maybe not by a new member) and it was in the main established members with a long history of punting, reviewing and posting who kicked up a stink and took his detractor to task over the matter. Many members reported this insulting post and as the first moderator who logged in after this occurred, I dealt with it.

There is nothing arbitrary about the rules......what might be subjective is each individual mod's interpretation of whether a rule has actually been broken in some situations, but we have the Patcave to discuss such cases and reach an agreement on how to deal with them on an individual basis.

As to the mods being unpoliced, well Pat acts in that function, so I would suggest that you direct complaints about mods to her by pm.

It's a bit like association football:

A warning is like a warning on the pitch.
An infraction is like a yellow card.
Banning is the red card.........your off the pitch and suspended for a period of time depending on the severity of the foul.

Reasons for giving infractions are contained in the infraction notification that you receive by pm. In addition, there should be a moderator's comment on the post that resulted in the infraction being issued and the offensive material will be shown as having been deleted from there.

3 current infractions result in an automatic 1 week ban. Serious breaches of rules result in an immediate temporary or permanent ban.
