I don't they will ever be able to remove cash altogether but I do find tapping cards very convenient.

Of course, the government would abolish cash if they could and force you to account for every penny in an account; where it came from, where it went, and how much tax was paid on it.

I did not want contactless cards, but all of my cards automatically switched to a contactless version on renewal.

I've actually got used to it now, and can see the advantages.

I got my new card 6months ago specified no chip and received one without a chip

But everywhere now looks you at you like your stupid if you don't automatically tap

Soon with online banking you will be expected to use your phone as payment cards will be obsolete too

I went down south a couple of months ago to see a girl parked in secure carpark
When I was trying to leave you couldn't pay in cash!!

Fine I thought!?

I had my card as a backup but found out you could only pay by contactless!!
no slot in the machine for card!!

I ended up having to phone through only to be advised there was a shopping mall on the high street that had a paypoint

Had to walk around trying to find a shopping mall to pay so I could get my car out of the bloody carpark!!

This contactless is becoming a Joke!!
But I'm still determined I'm not getting one!!

Don't start me about the ones that use their phone for contactless payments for everything!!! 勞

I’m kind of the opposite, I accept revolut I rarely have cash on me, but I don’t worry that it will ever become a cashless society, maybe I’m being old fashioned but there will always be people dealing in cash, not just us but construction etc etc.

But I agree about the banking trail . . . One day I was in Boots in Dublin doing my weekly work shop - you know, couple bumper packs of condoms, couple bottles lube, extra large bottles mouthrinse, bumper packs baby wipes - I was at the self service till, paying by card, and I realised my face was being recorded onscreen over the till. So my name, banks my info, image, and weekly work shop, where does all this info even go?!!

I queued at a Starbucks drive through one day (I hate Starbucks overpriced coffee but in my defence it was a hot day and I really wanted an iced coffee, please don’t judge me lol) I got to the order window and the attendant goes “cash only our card machine is out of order” and I realised I had no cash, not even any change rattling around in the car and I questioned my entire existence as a h@oker who had zero cash. Soooooo I had to sit in the queue with no coffee just waiting to exit again!!

How the hell do criminals/dealers etc etc get away with it any more when an escort can’t even buy a bag in BT without getting interrogated?!!

All this started during the ‘Rona. Amazing how we could get Rona from cash but not newspapers selling fear porn. In London a ton of places don’t accept cash. It would be pretty grim for escorts and clients if we lived in a cashless society. I try to keep cash in circulation as much as possible but the ‘Rona era gave me a bad habit of using card constantly.
I can’t help but think many western governments look enviously at China’s social credit score. Remember when that was an episode of Black Mirror?

It’s called Nosedive and it’s on Netflix. About two years before the Chinese Communist Party introduced the social credit credit score. Wonder did it give President Xi ideas?

With the prevalence of CCTV, if they can get facial recognition worked out, we might be able to skip the implants and jump straight to Skynet. They'll be able to track your movements, see what you left the shop with and adjust your earnings accordingly.

While governments do have an obvious interest in this, they are at least bureaucratic by nature and are relatively slow to adapt. Big business, however, will make a hard 90° turn overnight if more profits can be had. Between the ease of contactless payment, constant GPS monitoring and social media algorithms we are making it far to easy for major corporations to use our own information to separate us from our money.
