Woman pleads guilty to brothel keeping in Cork City

Significant developments occurred today in a case where a jury of 12 men was sworn in for the trial of a man and two women accused of organising prostitution and keeping brothels in Cork.

***************************, pleaded not guilty to 69 counts this morning but later in the afternoon she pleaded guilty to five counts of keeping brothels at 18 Grafton Street and 26 John Street on various dates in 2006 and 2007. ******** cried as she was being re-arraigned. Sentencing in her case was adjourned until May 12.

The prosecution then indicated that they were entering a nolle prosequi in the case against ******************************, Cork, who had pleaded not guilty to six similar counts.

Effectively, that means that the Director of Public Prosecutions dropped its prosecution of ****** who now stands cleared of all charges.

Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin told the 12 men of the jury, “There have been significant developments, huge developments. One defendant pleaded to a number of charges and her case is gone back for sentencing and the state has not gone ahead against another defendant. You can put them out of your mind as if they never existed.

“The case that started as a trinity is now down to one,” the judge said.

The one person who now faces trial, commencing at 2 p.m. tomorrow is ********************************, who pleaded not guilty to a total of 69 counts related to the alleged organisation of prostitution and the keeping of brothels at 26 John Street and 18 Grafton Street, Cork, on dates between January 2006 and May 2007.

Unfortunately this is becoming more common. You are entitled to know the reason for any search / charge. If the Guards are acting on information received e.g PIMP or disgruntled punter, if you go the court, these witnesses HAVE to appear in court. The fear of going to court to defend a charge seems the most worrying aspect..IT IS NOT, you may and probably will be charged regardless and end up in court based on what you admit to. IF NOT KEEPING A BROTHEL, do not admit to it..... Ask the Garda in charge for the opportunity to speak with a FREE legal representative BEFORE you sign anything.....Again...DON'T sign anything if it is not true.

The trial of a woman on charges of organising prostitution and keeping brothels opened in Cork this afternoon.
***************, aged 42, of S*****, W*****, County Cork, has pleaded not guilty to a total of 69 counts related to the alleged organisation of prostitution and the keeping of brothels at 26 John Street and 18 Grafton Street, Cork, on dates between January 2006 and May 2007.

Prosecution senior counsel ******* told the 12 men of the jury at Cork Circuit Criminal Court that Ms O’*****’s partner, T*** ******, also of Scartbarry, had previously pleaded guilty to the organisation of prostitution and the keeping of brothels at John Street and Grafton Street, Cork.

Ms F**** SC said the Grafton Street premises (between Oliver Plunkett Street and South Mall) over the Jade Winters adult shop was raided in November 20, 2006.

Ms F****** said: "A number of covert cameras were found in rooms used for prostitution, in particular one of the rooms. The covert camera was triggered on by a person working in the sex shop down stairs. Covert cameras were found in electrical plugs in the wall and that sort of thing.

"In a raid at the premises at Scartbarry where Mr L****** and Ms O’***** reside - computer equipment was found. The State will say the evidence demonstrates from these covert cameras a live feed that could be relayed to what was occurring in these rooms where the business of prostitution was being conducted," Ms F***** said.

The senior counsel said: "A particular list demonstrated how the spoils of prostitution were being divided. One of the lists you will see, has each of the girls working at any given time. Half of what they earned went to what was described as ‘boss’, half went to themselves."

*** ***** senior counsel for Ms O’L**** said the defence was prepared to accept that the premises were brothels and the prosecution did not need to prove this.

Uncontested statements from five customers and five prostitutes were read into evidence without the parties being identified.
