Probably from the idea of giving'Christmas boxes'(i. e. presents) to people such as workers, or people you deal with during the year such as the local postman, butcher, barber, etc - a tradition that has probably died.
In the Republic of Ireland, it is still more commonly know as St. Stephen's day.
