I remember when my english wasn't as good as it is now I found Harlan Coben books easy to read, Michael Connelly is quite easy too, James Patterson (but personally dont like this writer much)........As for crime books I am reading now I could recommend Mo Hayder, but thats for more advanced english speakers I thing, whatever I read I still can't understand all words, but have an idea what the book is about and understand most of sentences which is good. The more you read the more you learn, good luck to your friend.
True Evil, Greg Iles. Read it yourself also.
I would also recommend Michael Connelly & Agatha Christie. Both use very simple words & short sentences. Kellermen is great but doesn't have the same simplicity your friend would be looking for x
