I've done my family tree back several generations and my ancestors had on average 14 children surviving to adult age, with a number of stillbirths and deaths in childhood and mothers dying in childbirth. Don't think they used contraception. but there were some church rules about abstinence, sex wasn't allowed during lent or other days of fasting. There's a noticeable spike in births in January/Feb.
