For a short read - King Rat by James Clavell, or Tai Pan from the same author (slightly longer this one)
Or JRR Tolkien The Lord of The Rings Trilogy (reread a few times, although the films were quite crap in comparison)
same author The Hobbit (for a shorter read)

If you want to enjoy a not too serious outlook on military history you could read the adventures of Flashman, who was the notorious bully in Tom Brown School Days. Try to start from the first book in the series.
FLASHMAN - George MacDonald Fraser

IF you're into fantasy try robin hobb the assasins aprentice/ a song of ice and fire, george r r martin/ The painted man (good short read) Robert jordan wheel of time series (12 books in all but worth it). or Bill Hicks Love all the people. It gets repettitive though as it's a biography of his stand up routines but still good. Chopper is also a good funny few books though dark humour and violence through out.. Hope that helps
