Ireland, like most Third World countries seeking to upgrade its infrastructure, has ploughed gazillions of euros into upgrading its roads first, hence all our shiney new motorways (sans motorway rest areas). The rail network is waaaaaayyyy down the list.

Iarnród Éireann (we're not there yet, but we're getting there) also sell first class tickets for non-existent first class carraiges, have a train fleet that's around fifty years old, have a network of railways over much of the country that they don't use, and are generally a pack of wasters and morons.

To answer your other question, old people talk so much because they want to impart the wisdom of their years of experiences. I recommend an iPod - most people leave you alone when they see plus with wires sticking out of your ears

Oh baby, I could have told you. Don't try going to Mayo, it is about 3:45 by fucking train, I scared the conductor the last time I traveled that route. It makes you want to commit bloody murder.

I rather harshly asked the conductor why it takes more that 3 hours to travel anywhere in a country a sixth of the size of California? The train started to go backwards at one point. It was annoying, and then you have the parents with their darling little ones creating terror in the isles. Train travel is not managed well in this country. In Holland if I am in a train for 3 hours I will be getting out in France at the end of the journey.

You should have sat in the first carriage you would have gotten to your destination a little quicker.

your should travel from Belfast to Derry! Train goes right up to the North coast and then down to Derry. Nice if u want to see great scenery. Horrid if u want to get there in normal time! And what about that motorway they started building 50 years ago to connect the two cities and ran out of money!

I thought this happened to me when I got up to get a drink on a train once too.........

Turned out I just sat in a different seat facing the other direction when I came back........
