Yes, your initial posts were on topic.

Later on, you were bantering with Anon and the nature of that banter took the thread off topic. It happened. I dont believe that either of you meant it. However, you should (in my humble opinion) be careful. i.e. if you do take a thread off topic, bring it back..... you are a smart guy, you already know this!
I think you still need to read that thread... I did so earlier

But just curious, define the level of "off topic" as what we said was still along the lines of a threesome (escort - spouse/spouse)

You see this is where the problem with deleting stuff that one person consider's off topic, another may not or there may be some tangible or at worst Salvador Dali type surrealist link to the original topic, that's where you will get people complaining that their post was not off topic and should not have been deleted.

and btw I really do not see it in the rules that someone that goes off topic has to be the one to bring it back, perhaps it would be better if everyone had...

"Ok... so back to the topic"

in the sig and that would be a disclaimer and meet your and others needs.

What about a option for the thread starter to request his thread to closed once they feel the question has been answered of course with the final say being with a mod/manager or is this suggestion a bit nanny state-ish

Guys this is a really tough one and kind of only works on a thread by thread basis, however, I don't think it's fair on the mods to have to decide what's on topic or not on topic, or what's not on topic but still ok and the thread is just progressing and should be left.........

I think the thread originator should decide at the beginning of the thread...........

Jayses we talk more here about how we should talk about things and who should do what and how they should do it and what should be allowed and what shouldn't, than actually talking and doing............

We're turning into a committee, or worse yet, the bloody government..............
What i really like about Alanas idea its black and white and no grey area like someone saying oh i didnt spot the tick etc,
the problem with the poster saying it is that may be missed ,as i myself have often got involved in a thread when a few posts have
been made and not gone back to the first post in the thread. Concering the thread being hijacked well then post it in the on topic
section and uve no problem. This way at least we can have some place that can remain sane. At the moment every thread is hijacked. If the idea of staying on topic dosent suit people they will vote with their feet and just wont post there problem solved
I for one would use the section alot i feel

if the thread originator posts in the on topic section he has the decision made at the beginning of the thread

What u are saying is not alot differnt because u are creating a section within a section im just defining clearer boundaries

Ya, I think it is. If the question has already been answered, then what's the harm in a bit of banter on the thread???

Because it like dominos you get one jokey pic then theres a spate of them and the original point gets lost. As i stated earlier on this thread somewhere near the start (lol) that this had to policed by the people replying to the thread with maybe a little nudge to repeat offenders from a mod/manager. I hope i dont come across a killjoy but i think there is a lot of very good and interesting threads which have gotten sidetracked lately.
Yes, I agree. People should have enough common sence to know themselves, and if they don't, as I said, the offending post should be quoted and have this in the reply and if a pattern is seen, then perhaps action in the form of a gentle nudge or wink in the direction of the offender may help.........

Well in my view very few threads are actual questions but someone makes a statement and then there is a debate
well u can never say a debate is finished so then there would be no way of saying the serious stuff is over on this thread now we can have our banter. Anyway whats so bad about streching people so that they can have banter while also remaining on topic

I think what im expecting is wit which i know is beyond most

Do you remember when you came here first? You were all over the place. Your posts were very hard to classify.

So, for you to suggest to me or anyone else that Salvador Dali might be an element in their posts is a bit funny. You have come a long way mate...... but none of us are perfect yet. And I have a real issue with anyone not seeing that they might not have a fault...........

Your heart is definitely in the right place. just be careful with the rest of us
