If I was going to the US but not sure to what state I would narrow it down by finding the type of landscape I liked. Then climate and facilities available and how it may effect you career choice. For landscape start with costal or not, Mountain terrain or not then by climate and so forth until you have a small list. Before I settle I would also have to live there for a year or so.

Did you consider Hawaii?
