I'm just wondering if you could tell the world one thing about sex work, what would it be?

It could be anything.

Do people think you make much more money than you do in reality? Has it affected your perception of the opposite sex? If so, for better or worse? Even though you're with people, does it get lonely sometimes?

There's lots of examples but if the wider world could only know one thing about your life as a sex worker, what would you like it to be?

1. The one thing I'd say about the biz is that total legality would make all of our lives better. Nobody fancies living as a half-criminal. Sex is like the daily bread, one of the most elemental part of Maslow's pyramid of needs. Normalize it accordingly.

2. Doesn't matter what people think about my salary. Whatever we make is the foundation of our independency. Many of us had nothing before this job. If I can buy every single thing I want without having to rely on my parents ever again or being the bitch of anyone who forces me into monogamy in return for their financial support, I am in the right place.

3. My perception of men hasn't changed much, but I interact a lot more with them than ever before, and that teaches me a lot.

4. Being apart from our friends while touring can obviously be difficult sometimes, but we can cultivate more appreciation for our own company, and make new friends along the way.

5. One thing about my life as a sex worker is the opportunity for a huge amount of personal growth that no other job has ever inspired me to be invested in so much.

I'm writing a fictional character who is a sex worker.

I read Mia Doring's book and it's so fecking lazy. It sets the culture back years. Sex workers = victims + men who pay for sex = rapists. That's the message for 300 pages and it's just absurd. Her experiences were awful but she did have a responsibility to point out just that, that they were her experiences and her experience isn't the universal one. It's irresponsible and as I said, completely lazy. It's 1 side of a very complex world and although that side is ugly, I think there is a lot of hidden beauty in the other side of this world and it's so much more interesting to me. Probably only 8 people will eventually read about my character but I would like to think they'll at least read something that tried to be honest and balanced and didn't rely on themes like drug addiction or being pimped or working outdoors or any other trope that's been done a tousand times. I believe there's a wealth of humanity to be found in this subject and the reason it rarely gets depicted in books tv + film is because nobody really looks. Same way Irish men in old American films were portrayed as drunks. It's easier to portray a character the way you think people already see them rather than portray them as they really are.
