I am astounded by your experience.
There is no explanation for it. The Guard in question was acting Ultra Vires (the latin term for acting outside his powers). However, his mandate allows him to do that unless challenged as you did. After that, he must walk away. Unless he invokes section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows him to move you along if he believes that you are likely to cause a disturbance. I cannot see how he could invoke this in your situation. You have two remedies. 1. complain to the relevant Superintendant. However, this would likely cause emabarrassment to you if you are "attached". 2. Refuse, asyou did and force a false arrest. There would be significant damages available in that situation in my view if you were subsequently arrested or harrassed. I think the reality is that most guys would capitulate and move on though as most of us dont want a confrontation with the Gardai...

Ho ho ! Did you know that apparently until not that many years ago, married british women were expected to give men fun on demand. Basically men were allowed to have their way on request? Some pom legal bloke mentioned that to me in a pub once and it seems there is some truth in it, even if it seems akin to bloody rape ?!
It was on the basis that there was no law governing rape within marriage. The man was considered to have "conjugal rights", i.e. he could have sex with his wife when he wanted as his right. The situation was the same here until the late 1980's when the law changed....

Sorry to continue an off topic discussion, but I have two minor points to add. There really isn't such a thing as British law. Scotland has a somewhat different system, and generally a less barbaric one, compared to England and Wales. Indeed the "right" of English and Welsh men to rape their wives was only abolished in 1991, by the House of Lords (so maybe they are useful after all). The Scottish courts got rid of it a bit earlier, in 1982.
To get back on topic, I agree. The only way we can keep our rights is to know them and to insist on them in the face of authority.
“I wish you wouldn’t keep appearing and vanishing so suddenly; you make one quite giddy!”
“All right,” said the Cat; and this time it vanished quite slowly, beginning with the end of the tail, and ending with the grin, which remained some time after the rest of it had gone.
That is a bit worrying alright! Punters stick out like a sore thumb some times. I have been around this area socially and can spot a punter easily. It doesn't help when the girl insists on directing you to the door while on the phone. That is a dead give away. Girls should have their directions in a pre written text.
