No. And his fear of Covid is a real problem, he is withdrawn and hardly goes anywhere these days. Surrounded by a small group of bad advisors.

Putin recognizes Ukrainian separatist regions as independent

    By AP

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin has recognized the independence of separatist regions in eastern Ukraine — a move that will severely ratchet up tensions with the West amid fears that his country could invade Ukraine at any moment and use skirmishes as a pretext for an attack.

Putin’s announcement comes after a meeting of his Security Council and paves the way for Russia to openly send troops and weapons to the long-running conflict pitting Ukrainian forces against Moscow-backed rebels.

A 2015 peace deal ended large-scale fighting, but violence has simmered and has seen a spike in recent weeks amid the wider crisis.

Vladimir Putin will recognise the Russian-controlled territories in southeast Ukraine as independent states in a pivotal decision, scuttling an existing peace agreement and possibly triggering tough new sanctions from the west.

Putin announced the decision in a televised speech marked by the Russian leader’s visceral anger at a country he has called a “brother nation”.

It remains possible that Putin will next send in his military to “defend” the regions in a prelude to a larger war in east Ukraine, or even a full-scale invasion of the country, using the estimated 150,000 troops that he has mustered near Ukraine’s borders.”

“Therefore I believe it is necessary to take a long overdue decision to immediately recognise the independence and sovereignty of the Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic,” the Russian proxy states in east Ukraine.”

    ………

France and Germany are both signatories of the Minsk agreements, a peace deal that will probably be abandoned as a result of the Russian decision.

After the breakup of the Soviet Union we seen many former Warsaw Pact countries breakup.

The Czech Republic and Slovakia was a fairly peaceful and amicable split.

Yugoslavia was a totally different story. This was a country that was made up of many different cultures and creeds but was held together under Tito's rule.

Ukraine is similar in many ways. It was formed as a country by the USSR.

It was never a nation prior to this and is and always will be a devided nation.

When Russia annexed Crimea I was surprised that they didn't occupy the east of the country at the time.

I really do hope that there can be a peaceful outcome to the current situation but I honestly cannot see Ukraine remaining a united country.

    Sadly , I agree xx

: Though I Must say - if it was not for the Russian provocation , Ukraine could very well

live in peace : their mixed ethnicities no different from any number of other European countries xx
