There are so many contradictory opinions on the subject of masks at the moment, surely they would encourage touching of the face more often, adding to the problem

Scientists, TDs call for change in policy on wearing face masks in public

Government urged to back measure as new evidence suggests use of basic masks in social settings can prevent spread of Covid-19

Pressure has increased on the Government to require that face masks be worn routinely by the public to contain the Covid-19 virus, in line with a change in scientific opinion in favour of the measure.

Scientists and TDs have called for the change based on indication that basic face masks in social settings can prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the Irish Nurses & Midwives Organisation has welcomed a change in national policy, which now mandates surgical face masks in all settings for any healthcare workers who provide care within 2m of a patient including where social distancing cannot be maintained.

: it is Madness , that it is only Now that ‘proper PPE’ is mandated for healthcare workers !

Nope , let me correct that : wearing Surgical face mask when caring for Covid patients

not within 2 meters , but anywhere in the same air-space is insufficient .

Immunologist Prof Luke O’Neill of Trinity College Dublin said he believed

people will soon be required to wear masks in public.

He strongly recommended people wear them when going outside, citing evidence that

when infected people speak they produce aerosols that carry the virus.

Infectious diseases specialist Prof Sam McConkey of RCSI has

also backed the wearing of masks by the public,

but warned of unacceptable risk if it resulted in a shortage for frontline staff

at a time when there is pressure to source PPE.

: I get my news from overseas and JAMA etc.

: apparently scientific news travels slow

: there is a worldwide shortage of PPE , hence governments have been

hesitant to recommend wide usage by the general public , aiming to

reserve all they could for frontline workers — yet the fact remains , and

it would seem finally is openly acknowledged by local leadership , that

indeed a simple face mask can and Does save Lives !

I am Mad ! At the needlessly lost lives , the needless suffering that

Could have been avoided if Only they’d spoken up sooner !

    : Everywhere .

"warned of unacceptable risk if it resulted in a shortage for frontline staff at a time when there is pressure to source PPE"

Which I suspect is the REAL reason why masks were not recommended sooner. It would have been "unacceptable" to admit that there was a scarcity of masks, so we are told wearing masks is not recommended.

it dint take scientists to tell us we should wear masks, it was common sense really
Problem is and we have seen it that if the public all wear them there be none for front line staff,
there is a shortage already and our nurses and doctors etc had not these at all.

I was making my own and using a couple of bandana's ages ago as well as trying to keep to social distancing

Saw a woman pulling down her mask to talk to people outside the supermarket this morning. There needs to be some education in relation to use of masks.

It's the same for all ppe. People have no idea how to use it and the training required in the end would probably be counter productive. Would prob cause more infections than they would prevent.

Generally I would say people can be trained but after watching the orange menace last night suggesting injecting disinfectant and shining uv inside the body as potential treatments for covid, I no longer have any faith in the human race.

Masks are a good idea but only when there are enough of them to go around.
