You want to protect yourself from future pain. If you don't want to have feelings for a girl who may not have feelings for you.

The very first time you ask yourself, am I starting to like her, that's the time to walk away. It's what I've done all my grown up life.

I have one experience like that in Germany but it was situation where two of us knew it wouldn't work out We did have a few moments together to which it was fun. To be fair, some girls do mess about before the money is sorted.
