    One hundred years ago today.
The First Dáil meets for the first time in the Mansion House ,Dublin. The meeting began at 3.30 pm and lasted about two hours. It consisted entirely of Sinn Féin M.P.s who had been elected in the 1918 General Election(an invitation had been issued to all Irish MPs but only those of Sinn Féin, who were not imprisoned attended). The meeting was mostly conducted in the Irish language and a roll call was held.Michael Collins and Harry Boland were marked as present (as an alibi)even though they actually were in England at the time, assisting in the breakout of Eamon DeValera from Lincoln Jail.
The British proscribed the Dáil in September 1919.Thereafter it met in secret.

Separately in Tipperary the Soloheadbeg Ambush took place. This is sometimes given as the beginning of the Irish War of Independence.Nine men of the Third Tipperary Brigade of the Irish Volunteers (including Sean Treacy and Dan Breen)attacked those delivering gelignite to a local quarry. This party was being escorted by two RIC Constables. Both RIC were shot and killed and the gelignite was removed.

Fifteen years ago today(March 29,2004) the smoking ban in workplaces in Ireland was introduced, putting an end to generalised smoking in pubs and introducing specialized smoking areas that were open to the atmosphere. That or smoking outside the front door.
