Irish racing cyclist left with seven-week erection after fall onto crossbar; cured in Dublin hospital

The man has since reported no problems and is once again “enjoying intercourse”, according to a study of the rare case outlined in the latest issue of the Irish Medical Journal.

The 22-year-old rider is not named in the case study in order to protect his privacy but is described as a “competitive cyclist”.

He sustained a blow to his “perineum” – the ‘undercarriage’ area between the scrotum and anus – when he fell onto the crossbar of his mountainbike.

The pain, swelling and bruising left by what was obviously a hard fall had eased within days but the unfortunate cyclist was left with a permanent erection, known as priapism.

This resulted from an abnormally high flow of blood into the area which did not subside.

He decided to endure the problem rather than seek help, only presenting to the Meath and Adelaide Hospital in Tallaght, west Dublin, some five weeks after his fall and the erection began.

Medical staff examined his penis and found when pressure was applied to interrupt blood flow the erection subsided. However, when that pressure was removed the erection return immediately.

There followed a two-week period during which the mountainbiker was treated with dressings that applied pressure to his penis. They interrupted the blood flow for long periods in the hope they would cure the problem.

However, when those dressings were removed the erection returned immediately, with no progress having been made to resolve what must have been an embarrassing injury (and one that kept him off the bike for a prolonged period – Ed).

Eventually, treatment based on the insertion of catheters and platinum coils to stem and regulate the man’s blood flow ultimately corrected the problem.

The study notes that when the patient was reviewed after a one-month period there had been no return of abnormally long erections.

It also concluded that because the condition of having a permanent erection is painless, it is not unusual for patients to present very late for treatment.

When those treating the patient reviewed medical literature for similar cases, they could find only two incidents in which cyclists had been left with priapism due to falling onto their crossbars.
