This is not the first time we have heard of gang rapes and sexual violence against women in India. They seem to have a serious disregard towards women over there. What is most upsetting is the attitude and indifference of the police force.

I think indifference is the wrong term, but India is a very Patriarchal society and women do not have the same rights as men. As SteveB states, you don't need to travel too far see this attitude.

That is horrific, but we needn’t feel that superior to India in the humane stakes. Out of all sexual offences against women reported in Ireland there is only a 3% conviction rate. Even when convicted, the sentences handed out are obscenely light. It’s an insult to victims who suffer the trauma of the attack and have the courage to endure the court proceedings.

The lenient and inconsistent sentences handed out by Justice Garrett Sheehan, Justice Paul Carney, Judge Martin Nolan, et al are a slap in the face to the victims. The sooner there is at least 50% representation by women in the High Court, the better.

of course you seem to be missing the completely obvious thing that in 97% of those cases it was decided that it clearly wasnt rape at all if the accused wasnt found guilty
