    Default Ian Paisley

Breakingews.ie and RTE are reporting that Big Ian was "rushed" to hospital after being taken ill at home yesterday. No word yet on his condition.

At 85, you have to wonder how much is left in the tank.

I don't want to put the man in his grave just yet, but what do you think Ian Paisley's legacy will be, and how will Irish history remember him?

His legacy will be his being a very pure exponent of religious bigotry. He is one of those utterly irredeemibly self-righteous true believers. I couldnt begin to articulate how low is my opinion of such people.

This is to say nothing of the his involvement in The Troubles. I am just talking about sheer, miserable, prejudiced narrow-minded bigotry.

His legacy can be summed up in one word: Excrement.
    Bada Bing!!!

While I have not, and do not, agree with many of his views I wish the old man well. He is first of all a husband, a father, grandfather and there are those near to him who will love him dearly. So best wishes to him and hope he makes a full recovery. Just as I would wish if Martin McGuinness were unwell and who will be loved by those near to him.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid this post demonstrates to me that bigotry is not only always in other people we see it in - it can be much closer than we think.

Uum...the difference is we dont stand on a soapbox ( unless you count this forum) forcing bigotry and our narrow minded posturing down other peoples throats enciting hatred in people who cant think for themselves. (This applies to all like minded posturing people as him, not just Paisley)

Oh, I'm sorry. I missed the point where you were appointed to sit in judgement on who is "forcing bigotry", "narrow minded posturing" and "enticing hatred" on others. It strikes me that the views on this website directed against the man in question are all three.

Personally I wish him and all those who are unwell at the moment every best wish.

I glad you find the world enhanced by people like Paisley, Adams, Thatcher...oh...the list goes on.

Well ma'am first and foremost I consider him a religious bigot. That he is married and has children does not give him a free pass to have spewed his dogma/scripture inspired bile for his entire adult life.

He is a thinking human being capable of critical reasoning but instead he chooses cant. I have no specific ill will towards him in terms of his health. However I have only compassion for all the ordinary people (y'know the sort: gay or co-habiting or had an abortion or enjoyed sex and werent ashamed or were atheist or non-judgemental y'know those sorts) that an unthinking prick like that mercilessly castigated his whole life. That is where my sympathy would reside.
