I disagree that there are many out there who have made a lifestyle choice, during the Celtic Tiger we were regarded as having an unemployment rate of zero, but there is a hardcore in all societies of between 4 and 6 per cent who are unemployed, that is the same here, I don't think that the 7 to 9 per cent extra now on the dole can be regarded as lifestyle choices.
Its not a made up job though. It's work thats not being done because there isnt the funds to do it. As for getting your dignity back, well that might be you. But surely it would feel better to actually do something than nothing?

Your other point, the 0% umeployment. It was technically classed as that because it was <3% which is what is generally accepted as being zero. But there were people who drew the dole back then, I know plenty of them. The only difference is back then they were working as well, and now they aren't.

Indeed, my only issue with employment schemes like you are proposing is that it displaces now or into the future a real job that pays a decent salary, tax and prsi.

I agree with doodles here , doing a made up job (just for the sake of it) wouldn't bring back your dignity. Its all well and good trying to give some a kickup the hole to, get off the dole but at the same time there has to be job desertion creation too what ever happened to FGs 5 point plan to get us working ? They bring in an intern scheme to give some companies free labour. Surely these companies should be targeted for fraud
