Question to buy or to let

during Ireland's housing boom "are you buying or renting" was
a question pushed out at dinner parties across the land.

those who may have purchased and felt smug about their piece of
equity in their home, would have enjoyed recalling their prowess.

today, it's a different landscape, you won't hear such questions.
my opinion? i don't really know. after paying various mortgages for
20yrs (still don't own a dwelling yet) i would be sceptical. are the banks
    just 'hands-off' landlords really.

I am renting at the moment but would like to get a house in future.
To answer your question...well I do not know whats the best in current situation but I do agree that banks are sort of landlords this days.
    Great thread btw.

Banks are landlords until the loan is payed of but I still would prefer to buy over renting at least you own something in the
Future with Renting you just paying into someone's pension fund.

i started very early due to circumstances and inspired by the
thought of home ownership. i've not rented much, but remember having
    a great room for £20 a week.

it's just that until you get the deeds off the banks, they can bring you on a roller coaster
ride of fluctuating interest rates. but when you buy, i suppose you feel different about the
whole thing, taking a keen interest in all aspects of the property, and enjoying putting your
    personal touch about the place.

Renting is only justified short time. This is the time to start looking round to buy. Trouble is its hard to get a mortgage now . i really feel sorry for those caught out in the boom and mostly they were taken advantage of by the banks. Great opportunity now for a good discrete central apartment in Dublin to let to the ladies on here on a short or long term basis. And one could always take payment in kind. Any Escort i've visited seem to take great care of their apt, and make excellent tenants. Pity these mean landlords insist on putting in cheap beds.
