No Dear, no typical white American stereotype here.. It is not a racial slur.. : In California a few years back several school districts

started to include Ebonics in their curriculum. Their rationale was, that inner city disadvantaged kids cannot be expected to learn

proper American English, and they should be tought in their native inner city language, which They, the African American Education

Pioneers termed Ebonics.. Of course all this happened at taxpayers expense, to the outrage of most people. Needless to say the big

idea died a slow and withering painful death..

And yes, I am proud of myself.. of being well informed.. And proud to be an American, where even ill advised ideas get a chance..

    A bit less vitriol, please.

I agree with you Anita, certainly much more money should be spent on education in US. It is a shame that we cannot provide a

better education across the board, to ALL kids. We, the wealthiest nation in the world, trail in academic achievement. It truly is a

shame. However, the term Ebonics was coined by African American Educators in San Francisco oh, about 12-15 years ago. I do not

feel it is a racial slur; certainly those Educators took pride in that term. They felt it authenticated the difference of the African-

American Culture compared to the 'regular' American's culture.... So, if I offended you, my deepest apologies...

I stand corrected.. : first known usage of term Ebonics was in 1973, it is the amalgam of Ebony and phonics.. Nowadays, some

people prefer the term African American English or AAE in place of Ebonics. I will state it again, no racial slur was intended...

Cultured/Educated African American people take pride in their heritage, instead of throwing insults around..

If you read my post correctly, it said that the school districts' rationale for including ebonics in their curriculum was, that

disadvantaged kids cannot be expected to learn English... I was not stating my opinion, I was simply relating events that took

place many a years ago... Be well. LOL

You know, my mother worked on the San Francisco School board back in the 70's, and was very upset when the whole 'Ebonics' thing was suggestion. As like alot of other black Americans, my mother, and former work mates, black and white, hated the term, and the idea behind it. As it really didn't solve the problem as to why 'Ebonics' would be needed in the first place if everyone received the same funding for a quality education, and not just the rich kids (who were usually white)

I actually won a lawsuit against the San Francisco School board for the busing of black children into white neighborhoods in the hopes of getting that quality education that so many blacks were unable to receive in their own neighborhoods, so your use of the word was kind of stinging.
