On the contrary, you can't use statistics to prove anything. I don't claim to have proved anything. I haven't even stated an opinion. I'm barely even asking a question. Other people on other threads raised an issue, and I'm trying to give people some help in evaluating it.

“All right,” said the Cat; and this time it vanished quite slowly, beginning with the end of the tail, and ending with the grin, which remained some time after the rest of it had gone.

Actually that stats thing was a joke. Now There is no problem giving an opinion or asking questions El Gordo but insuiating that this place is a private club is going a bit over the top isnt it. As was said before this is a free site and anyone can post here. As long as they follow the rules they can post on a multitude of topics etc, but the suggestion that this place is operating on a select few basis is ridiculous

not too sure if its a good thing for the forum for its top top posters to be elevated to the status of community moderator. or is that how it works usually?

No offence, but I'm somewhat disappointed in this thread. I already knew that anyone can register and post here. That wasn't what I was asking. I had also hoped to hear from some of the lurkers, although I know it's hard to get posts from people who don't post about why they don't post.

I haven't insinuated anything. I'm a lot less subtle than you seem to believe. If I think E-I has become a private club then I will say that. I won't insinuate. I haven't expressed an opinion on this question, here or elsewhere, directly or indirectly.

As I said, I don't have any historical data, so I can't tell you whether people are being modded because they post a lot, or if it's simply that once people become mods they tend to post more. It's an interesting question, but not one that the numbers above can answer.

do we have too many mods? i dont think other sites would have as many as here. there seems to be enough staff in place who have done the work of mods from time to time anyway

I dunno Gordo. I don't post here as much as I used to (except for the odd spurt from time to time).
I used to love this place , it was everything that the "other place" wasn't. I think an awful lot of the magic went when the mods were brought in and threads started to get deleted all over the place and posting having their guts ripped out simply because a particular mod disagreed arbitrarily with it.

I'm a huge believer in internet freedom and while I'm not totally against mods they definitely should not be made up of board members. You should never EVER actually see them on board...

If you want to see an example of this done well have a look at the peoplesrepublicofcork forums,
If you want to see it done badly (and I mean badly) take a look at the boards.ie forums...

I would say we don't have enough, with the amount of BS, spamming, Trolling and bush fires having to be put out constantly because of peoples thin skin. You can't say anything to some people or else they'll go off and create a thread asking was it right for that person to insult me

And this place just does not have quality mods... I've been on enough boards to know that the less modding the better, these squabbles sort themselves out. The mods here seem to have been given a sledgehammer in their welcome pack.

I mean, anyone remember what QPH was like when he joined? He was insufferable (seems to have improved now though) and yet he was made a mod??? Crazy.....

Questions about modding are worthy of discussion, but I'm not sure how much of a role that plays in how new or occcasional users see the site.
