Thread: confused about a bus...

    Hey Zara, not sure if you are looking for this answer. What you are talking about is the 1st law of motion, i wont give you the definition verbatim cos i am geeky enough. It is simple down to the matter of you moving in a uniform motion with the bus. Uniform meaning same direction, same speed. (hope this doesnt come across in a condescending tone) So when jump up the only force affecting you is gravity and this only affects up and down movements. Once there are no other external factors affecting you or the bus when you jump up you will land in the same place. But, lets say the bus slows down, hits a sticky bit of road or turns just as you jump you will not land in the same place as an external force has stopped from travelling in a uniform motion with the bus.

    These are the words that people are looking for. At the moment of your theoretical jump, both the bus and yourself have the same velocity. Therefor, you will not move relative to each other. If, when you jump, the bus accelerates, or if you are on the roof and are decelerated by aerodynamic drag, you will move relative to the bus.

    As others have said it's because you're still moving along at the same speed. According to Newton's law of motion, if you're moving in a particular direction you will remain moving in that direction at the same speed unless an external force acts upon you.

    When you're on top of the bus, the external force is air resistance (since the air is standing still while you're trying to move forward, it's like you're trying to bust through the air at a very high speed). When you're inside the bus, the air around you is moving along at the exact same speed as you are.

    Hi Zara

    When you are on the bus you are in contact with the bus and your own momentum is that of the bus...essentially, from a momentum perspective you have become part of the bus.

    If the bus continues to travel at the same speed you will maintain that momentum unless an outside force comes into play. So, everything in the bus has the same momentum, even the air. When you jump, everything in the bus continues to have the same momentum.. including you.

    You don't have the buses momentum when you lose contact by jumping, you have your own, but you are in the air inside the bus, which shares the same momentum as that of the bus..and you land in the same place.

    If the bus braked, an outside force now has an effect and you would land further forward, if it accelerated, you'd land further back.

    If you could jump inside the bus and suspend yourself mid air, you would still land in the same place providing no additional forces acted.

    When you are on top of the bus there is an additional force in play. The friction of the air outside the bus.

    The same reason why we are on a planet which is moving at a massive speed, but we don't feel it.
