America is certainly a fucked up place in many ways. I do however think those individuals should be rescued with no expense spared and they should pay the bill afterwards.

I'm sure they have insurance anyway for such eventualities, tax payers money won't be used .

As is usually the case. If someone you cared about was in that situation you'd be running around freaking out making calls and banging on doors to get anything at all done.

I should clarify above... They should definitely try to rescue them, until it is impossible they could have survived (about 35 hours time).

However, the likelihood is they have already perished. Either there was a flaw in the central pressure chamber and the sub was crushed. In this case it would have shattered, rather than crushed because it was carbon fiber (that is unusual).

Or a seal went. If a seal was breached, it wouldn’t crush because the pressure inside would (very quickly) equalise to the outside, but the pressure would fairly instantly kill everyone, and reduce the size of the air pocket to a tiny space.

If they were conscious, and just sitting there, subs like this have dive weights attached to them that are designed to be easily ejected. This would cause the sub to quite rapidly accend to the surface. It wouldn't be a nice ride, and it would fuck some of the people up, but they would be alive. The fact that it doesn't seem like this happened would suggest that they have met an unfortunate end.
