Well it's a pity I didn't see this thread sooner. I haven't time to read 14 pages but just thought I would throw in my thruppence worth.

It has crossed my mind that he is definitely a man of conviction.
He must be aware that his behaviour is unlikely to do much for his furture employment prospects, so it makes me wonder if there is something more to this.
Perhaps someone behind him with a bigger agenda.

Or a product of his environment, they were nearly all homeschooled by their mother. As a family they appear very cohesive in the their views and all based on a very narrow religious point of view. We have seem others religions where that type of belist system has instilled a particular mindset in the believers. For balance, having been home schooled the academic results as graded by the Irish educational system are very high. For whatever reason their ability to adapt to a wider societal system is clearly lacking as has been shown by their difficulties in Galway university and in employment in general
