They were trading rubbish back and forth at each other, not posting a cure for cancer. I could ban for an hour or two but that again would cause another brush fire.

All that was needed was to do the simple thing of return to the important topic. I did what I felt was right and it has hopefully started us on the road to coming up with a consensus on the issue of threads going way waaaaaay of topic.

I am happy to respond to rational people such as yourself but not to people who I know have hidden agendas, not interested and have neither the time nor inclination...
Although this thread was never meant to be a discussion of one or two particular decisions, I am glad that you have posted to explain your thinking. Westside appears to believe that modding decisions are directly inspired by the Holy Spirit and can or should never be explained to mortals, and certainly not questioned by them. You clear don't, and I'm grateful for your replies. But I still don't understand them.

We are talking about cases where a useful thread starts to accumulate unrelated junk postings. There's a judgment call about when that happens, and we can discuss that aspect some other time.

So let's suppose we have a case where the judgment is obvious, the thread is clearly an important one, for example a warning thread about safety issues, and a few people are obviously posting irrelevant crap. You close the thread. What has this accomplished? It hasn't punished the people who were posting the crap. They can happily post their crap somewhere else. After all, they don't care which thread they are posting on. That's the whole point, is it not? It's the people who want to discuss the original topic who are punished. They no longer can, at least not without starting a new thread. And if they start a new thread then what was the point of locking the old one?

I'm sorry if I'm just being slow. I've read your posts several times and I've made a genuine attempt to find the connection between what you are upset about and what you are doing. But I'm afraid I still just don't see it. Would you mind explaining it one more time, please?

“All right,” said the Cat; and this time it vanished quite slowly, beginning with the end of the tail, and ending with the grin, which remained some time after the rest of it had gone.

While I totally agree that people who post on ad threads should have there posts removed if they are not relevant to the ad and the individuals warned and temporarily banned if they do not co-operate, I do not think it is fair on the escort who is the most important body in the matter to have their ad essentially turned off, I don't think any other person/company would stand for there ads being shut down, if an ad or billboard is defaced they don't remove it and leave a blank space, no they would clean it up or put up a new one as that is what the client paid for..
Now I will say that while Anna's ad was ingenious in that it was also an opening for discussion hence keeping it live and on top I don't see anything in the rule book saying she can't do that other than bumping which she wasn't doing.
If the mods have a problem with a select few and in fairness we all know most of them there post's should have been removed and the individuals warned, at worst the ad could have been moved to general chat or soapland as it had turned into a discussion rather than an ad.....

Look, I hate to say it, but also - there have been no threads locked recently for going off-topic. The last one was weeks ago.

The fact that a thread that questioned and largely disagreed with a mod's decision has been closed speaks very badly for the forum.

The rest of it isn't really worth replying to, but this bit might interest some people. "Who's online" is a simple way of not getting logged out for those of us who don't post every 60 seconds: https://www.escort-ireland.com/board...reviewing.html

Going off topic is not against the rules, and therefore there is never a need to close down a thread for that reason.

I agree it can be a monumental pain in the arse but I reckon at least 80% of threads go off topic.
    So why is "selective"threads chosen.

I agree with Mousey that is a natural flow of conversation.

And I don't think there ever should be a rule made for it as it would reduce this forum to a sterile site, devoid of any craic or merryment

Too many of my quality threads meander into conversations or insults between people we need to just monitor threads I agree with closing threads that go off topic.......
