Well I did it twice and weather was atrocious both times wind rain fog so was not enjoyable, would be beautiful view on a clear sunny day.
we came down what is called the devils ladder and it can be rough going on a bad day with streams of water and falling debris you would
nearly want a hard hat . you should hire a guide as it is safer ,if there was a gang doing it he would cost around £200 max.
I have been on Carrauntoohil many times in the past, but maybe not for 10or 15.years now.
The usual approach is via the '' Devil's Ladder '', a step and slightly treacherous scar up the mountain. This is where people are most likely to get injured if careless. At the top of the '' ladder'' you reach a saddle, turn right and an easy enough track takes you to the summit. A narrow ridge with steep drops either side will take you onto another peak (only slightly lower than Carrauntoohil), called Binnkerragh.... which means sheep mountain.
You can also do a much longer horseshoe walk over the surrounding peaks. This ascends up Eisc an bhraca(another scar up the hills...... means groove cut by a harrow). This takes you up to a ridge walk that eventually takes in the above named mountains as well.
It's not really dangerous as long as one is careful, has some common sense and keeps an eye on tbe weather.

The 2 days we went a gang of us maybe 7 or 8 we had a guide booked and it was july (summer) but was a washout. Its not easy
to call it off after travelling 40 miles so easier to go ahead with the climb .Second time was early sept and could not believe how bad the day turned out so not easy to plan a mountain hike in this country in any month weather wise.

I have always been there on my own but originally learned the route from a guidebook.
I always had good weather but that was years ago and on your own it's easier to choose a suitable day.
