Thread: How long …

  1. Default How long …

How Long before a thread goes off topic or is hijacked?

We all know that conversations change topic as we all see the world differently, have our own concerns and agenda but when you see it on a thread it you can see it happen much more clearly.

Once it goes off topic, clearly readers lose interest and the topic is no longer discussed,

On the site there are only a handful of threads which have started true to topic and continue to run for years such as the jokes, or beautiful women thread.

What are your thoughts on how to keep threads on topic?

I've been thinking the same thing - there's a couple of ways a thread goes off topic. One is a when it genuinely heads in a different direction which I don't really mind if the discussion warrants it. Another is where someone deliberately drags it a certain way to troll or wind up other posters - that can only really be dealt with by the mods really.

However the one that really winds me up is the couple of lads (you know who you are!) who kill threads stone dead with 'funny' comments to each other about pulling themselves off, noses & dirty sheets etc - complete with 'witty' post edits. Once that starts the thread is finished and there's no point in going back to it. Its an obsession. If they were given their own thread for that crap then maybe the remainder of the topics would have a chance to breathe and evolve. Perhaps I'm out of line here being a newbie, but it really annoys me when I see it starting up.

Well a recent thread about abortion rights ended up discussing the show "Hannibal" and its merits, but that is the way conversations flow to be fair .

To be fair to MrBean it's always Beemer who starts it ...but I think he's moved on to young Dick now anyhow ...

    First page.

I've come to accept thread derailments and trolling as realities of being on forums. I find the goal of topic conservation as noble but ultimately futile.

don't get me wrong - its great that they have the craic with each other and get along - its just that it seemed to be every single thread there for a while and there weren't interacting with the topic just doing their own thing. If there was a Statler and Waldorf vibe going it would be enjoyable.............but no.
