‘He said he wanted to destroy the gate’ – man arrested after truck driven through gates of Russian Embassy in Dublin by Conor Feehan and Ciara O'Loughlin

A truck has been driven through the gates of the Russian Embassy in Dublin.

A man was arrested by gardaí after the incident at the premises on Orwell Road in an apparent protest at Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Video circulating online shows a truck reversing through the closed gates.

The Russian Embassy has been the focus of protests over Russia’s invasion of neighbouring Ukraine over the past week, with paint thrown over the insignia outside the gates and calls for ambassador Yuriy Filatov and other Russian diplomats to be expelled.

The incident happened at about 1.30pm on Monday, gardaí said.

A garda spokesman said an incident of criminal damage at the property was being investigated.

The arrested man has been taken to Rathfarnham garda station.

The Russian embassy has been contacted for comment.

A witness, Luksz Ruz, said he was protesting at the gates of the embassy with a small number of others when the truck parked outside.

“The driver said the Russians had killed innocent families in Ukraine, and he showed us pictures of the people on the ground,” he said.

“He said he wanted to destroy the gate, and he reversed into it. He destroyed the gate.”

“There was one garda here at the time and he arrested the driver,” he added.

Gardaí sealed off the scene, and the rigid body truck remained reversed into the embassy driveway with the damaged gate visible behind it.

The truck that went into the gate at the Russian Embassy is from Desmond Wisley Ecclesiastical Supplies. When Independent.ie rang the office, a woman who answered said she had only just heard of the incident, and didn’t know whether the driver of the truck was an employee or not.

A priest who threw red paint over the Russian embassy in Dublin has urged people in Ireland to continue to protest against the war in Ukraine.

Fr Fergal MacDonagh was among speakers who addressed a rally in Dublin city centre that was attended by several thousand protesters on Saturday.

Ukrainian ambassador to Ireland Larysa Gerasko also spoke to the crowds outside the GPO on O’Connell Street, warning that her country was on the brink of a “humanitarian catastrophe”.

Fr MacDonagh, from Dolphin’s Barn parish in south-west Dublin, threw the paint over the gates of the Russian embassy on Friday in protest at the invasion.

Organisers thanked him for the act on Saturday and invited him to address the rally.

The cleric explained what motivated him to vandalise the property.

“Yesterday morning when I woke up I heard on the radio that a maternity hospital had been bombed in Ukraine during the night,” he said.

“It’s appalling and horrific and it’s the work of evil what is happening in Ukraine, it’s a war crime and Putin will face justice in this world or in the next.”

He added: “I’ve been frightened and worried and anxious all week, all the last 10 days.

“We must protest, the people of Ukraine must know that they are not alone.”

Ms Gerasko thanked those who came out to voice their opposition to the war.

“Many cities in Ukraine are destroyed, many civilians are killed, many children, women and many Ukrainians flee the country, many refugees,” she said.

“We are at the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe.”

Tanya White, who is originally from Kyiv, demanded that Nato impose a no-fly zone in her homeland.

“My relatives, my classmates, my family they are all being bombed with rockets,” she said.

“The house that I lived in in Kyiv it’s being shelled by rockets continuously, it’s a nightmare.

“The main point is close the skies, close the skies over Ukraine and Ukraine will do the rest – they will win it.”

Hero? If embassies are considered as sovereign teritories of countries they are used by, doesnt this mean that Ireland is no longer neutral? Maybe exaggerating but results of dehumanisation of a nation are obvious, fair game. How about Israeli or US embassy? Saudi?
Fair play for taking in refugees from Ukraine but how about taking in taking refugees from Yemen, Sudan, Eritrea....? They get different treatment dont they? Less fancy victims or there is another bias?

Over 2000 children arrived ( with the Mothers ) to Hungary, I am very proud of my sister she is volunteering at the train station with her friends. Of course everything prepared from our money, the Hungarian gov still doesn’t do more then propaganda videos.

The situation is a tragedy.
