Totally agree with your sentiment and I don't think arguing the semantics is a positive thing to do.

True. I can talk openly of my past with two confidants and would use that phrase. It says more about others deep seated views that they find the term offensive because they see "use" in the context of a tissue or whatever, they are the "users" in thale negative context.
