    What do they actually do when they are checking the engine? Do they have to lift the car up on those things and remove the engine? I mean how is he able to check your timing belt?

    Edit: its a cheap car. Not a mercedes or BMW.

    No. Theres normally a cover on the timing belt or you can see it when ye lift the bonnet.

    I think i have a timing chain in my car. Because i have never had to replace the belt and i have had the car a good 14 15 years.

    He has to take out the engine to replace the belt though someone told me. The belt is cheap. Its taking out the engine that costs a lot to the mechanic.

    Google the make and model of your car and you'll know if you have a timing belt or a chain.

    It depends on the car as to weather or not the engine needs to come out for a timing chain. Most times the engine doesnt come out for this.

    Chains are better . If your car is 14 years old I think you've done quite well. It must be a Japanese car.
