Saoradh headquarters searched in Lyra McKee murder probe.

Police investigating the New IRA murder of journalist Lyra McKee have carried out a search at the headquarters of dissident republican political group, Saoradh.

No arrests were made, however, police removed a number of items from Junior McDaid House at Chamberlain Street in Derry yesterday morning. The premises, on the edge of the city's Bogside, is home to Saoradh, its youth wing, Eistigí and a republican prisoners' support organisation.

Ms McKee (29) died after she was shot in the head by a New IRA gunman who fired indiscriminately into a crowd of people standing beside a PSNI Land Rover during a riot in Derry's Creggan on April 18.

In the days after Ms McKee's death, Saoradh became a focus of public anger with friends of the dead woman staging a protest at Junior McDaid House by painting red hand prints on the walls of the building.

Saoradh later issued a statement distancing the organisation from the New IRA. A spokesman said the organisation had offered its analysis of the events leading to Ms McKee's death.

“We did so as a political party on behalf of our membership who share our analysis of the terrible events,” he said.

The spokesman said Saoradh did not speak for any other organisation.

“Contrary to a hostile media and state narrative, we do not speak on behalf of the Irish Republican Army,” he said.

Confirming details of yesterday's search, a PSNI spokesman said: “Detectives from the PSNI major investigation team investigating the murder of Lyra McKee have carried out a number of searches in Chamberlain Street in Derry/Londonderry this morning, Tuesday 7th May.”

In response, Saoradh said the search came after a call by “pro-establishment parties” to put in place a tangible plan of action against republicans. The group said its national offices were targeted by “British Crown Forces” in what it claimed was a “heavy-handed rapid entry raid.

Lyra McKee death: four males arrested.

Police question two teenagers and two men over killing of journalist in Derry.

Police investigating the death of the journalist Lyra McKee, who was shot during disturbances in Northern Ireland last month, have arrested two teenagers and two men.

McKee, 29, was hit as she reported on unrest in Derry while standing close to a police vehicle. The New IRA, a dissident republican group, admitted responsibility but the person who fired the shot and those who police say helped him have yet to be identified.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said four males aged 15, 18, 38 and 51 were detained under terrorism legislation in connection with the violence, which they say was “orchestrated”.

The arrests were made in Derry on Thursday morning and followed searches at four homes.

Det Supt Jason Murphy said: “Detectives carried out searches at four houses in the city and arrested four people in connection with the violence which was orchestrated on the streets of Creggan on the evening of Lyra McKee’s murder. They are currently in custody, where they are being questioned.”

Murphy said more than 140 people had provided images, footage and other details to the investigation. He thanked the public for their support and urged others with information to come forward.

Police said the males were arrested by the major investigations team and were being questioned at Musgrave police station in Belfast.

The PSNI chief constable, George Hamilton, used a speech on Tuesday to increase pressure on those involved in the killings and anyone who helped them. “On the night of Thursday 18 April, bullets meant for police officers claimed the life of Lyra McKee. A young woman who championed inclusivity, murdered by young men who have been lost in the margins of our new beginning,” he said at Queen’s University Belfast.

“Her killers are not just the young man who fired the gun and his accomplice who recovered the casings, her killers are also those who supplied the gun and orchestrated the journey of those young men to the moment in which Lyra was murdered.”

Police have released CCTV of the person they believe fired the fatal shot. While the footage does not show his face clearly, the suspect appears to be short, stocky and in his late teens.

There was shock at the killing of McKee on 18 April, and the New IRA claimed the gunfire was meant to be aimed at police.

Police have praised residents in Creggan, a republican stronghold, for their level of cooperation.

Lyra McKee: Two Londonderry men charged with rioting

Two Londonderry men have appeared in court charged with rioting in the city on the night last month that writer Lyra McKee was murdered.

Christopher Gillen, 38, of Balbane Pass and Paul McIntyre, 51, of Ballymagowan Park, were remanded in custody.

The city's magistrates' court was told evidence against them has been obtained from mobile phone footage and a documentary filmed by MTV.

Police believe the two men are members of the New IRA, the court heard.

Mr Gillen, who is unemployed, is charged with rioting, petrol bomb offences and the hijacking and arson of a tipper truck.

Mr McIntyre, who works as a taxi driver, is accused of rioting, petrol bomb offences and the arson of a hijacked vehicle.

A police officer told the court that officers had gone into Derry's Creggan estate on 18 April to conduct searches but that was followed by a "sustained attack" by people who were wearing masks.

Four vehicles were hijacked, he added.

Police believe the two men can be connected to the rioting by clothing shown on various sources of video footage, including the MTV material, which was described by the officer as "excellent".

The prosecution lawyer said they believed that people in the area were using the filming of the MTV documentary, fronted by Reggie Yates, for their own purposes as "a propaganda operation".

A solicitor representing Mr McIntyre described the case against him as "extremely weak".

He said his client was willing to live outside the city and accept a number of conditions if he was granted bail.

The police officer told Mr Gillen's solicitor that the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) believes both men were members of the New IRA.

When the solicitor said the police had "no evidence" to support that belief, the officer replied: "That's correct."

During his deliberations about bail applications for both men, the judge referred to what he described as "disgraceful graffiti" that appeared in the Creggan estate recently, warning people not to give information to the police.

Ms McKee, 29, was shot while observing rioting in the Creggan area on 18 April.

There was disorder throughout the evening leading up to her death.

Violence broke out after raids were carried out by police, with detectives investigating dissident republican activity in the Mulroy Park and Galliagh areas.

The New IRA said its members carried out the murder.

Ms McKee's killing led to an outpouring of grief and calls for politicians in Northern Ireland to return to power sharing.

An 18-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy, who were arrested last week by detectives investigating Ms McKee's death, were released without charge.

The scumbag raising his arms in triumph as he was led into court and the scumbags outside supporting him.

Where is Mary Lou condemning this and appealing to people to cooperate with the PSNI.

No where to be seen, that's Sinn Fein showing their true colours.

I believe that SF did urge anyone with information at the time to come forward to the PSNI.

In a situation like this more Open Clear-forward Moral Support might’ve been called for xx

A personal appearance and maybe a small short speech to call for peace would have been

Well called for to try to even if not stomp out , but to simmer down tensions and gain the

Support of the Everyday Folk who want nothing more than to live in peace , live without

    daily threat of violence . ... , no ?

Remember : I’m a foreigner . I know sh*t according to some ; so please take my words

with a grain o’ salt xxx

Did they ever criticize the graffiti painted warning people of cooperating with the PSNI

Have they since condemned the disgusting scenes yesterday?

Have they welcomed the police progress in the case?

Barney, I like you and your posts, but on this matter you need to open your eyes and accept the reality that Sinn Fein are still controlled / too close to the IRA and dissident republicans.

A united Ireland will only happen when they are eradicated, I do believe that the youth in NI will be much more amenable to a United Ireland when the ghost of the IRA is truly buried.

What exactly are these wastes of carbon celebrating?

that the asshole deliberately shot an unarmed innocent woman?

or that he is such a useless asshole that he couldn't hit his intended target and thereby
    shot an unarmed innocent woman?
