The age of consent in this country dates back to the days that ladies were put into laundries to "protect them".
Many of our laws have been brought into the 21'st century. It's time for change here too.
Is there any benefit to locking this lady up. Is she a paedophile with a history of preying on underage victims? or did she make one mistake?
To anyone that doesn't like me here.

"Dt Gda Hughes agreed with James Dwyer SC, defending, that his client told gardaí that they waited until the boy’s 16th birthday as she believed that 16 was the appropriate age to conduct sexual behaviour. She has no previous convictions.

Mr Dwyer handed into court a report from a specialist in childhood sexual abuse. The reports stated that the teacher had no sexual interest in children or adolescents and did not qualify as being a paedophile.

The report stated that she did not groom the boy for her own sexual gratification, that he initiated sexual contact and she was flattered by it. The report concluded that she posed a very low risk of re-offending and no more risk than anyone in society

I do not personally do not think that the sex of either party involved should not be taken in to count, as the teacher slept with an underage kid (a minor).
So due to her actions, the teacher herself should be charged the same as anybody would be charged. Male or female, it should not make any difference and if so, then this must be questioned to why.

As far as I am aware of, teachers should not and are not allowed to be in any form of sexual relations with any student under the age of 18.
Changing the age of consent should not matter in such cases as the teacher knew what she was doing and didn't care about the consequences of her actions and deserve to be charged and registered like anybody else would if found guilty.

I agree the teacher should be guilty of an offence, but the offence should not be rape. I think the resultant sentence is harsh too.
In a jurisdiction such as the UK, an offense would have been committed but it would not be rape, and the teacher would have probably escaped with a non-custodial sentence.

Unethical behavour, but non illegal behavour can be punished in the workplace not in the courtroom.

The interpretation of certain events can be misleading. I think the use of the words "child" and "rape" are wrong. I can't believe how foolish and stupid she was. It would be easier to understand if the teacher was a 23 y o male and the student was female . I'm also shocked she wasn't aware of age of consent

The age of consent in Ireland is 17. This is the joint highest, with Cyprus, in the European Union.

age of consent is 16 in the UK, here its 17, another arse of a law and they met at a nightclub someone said and I do not agree thats it rape in any form,
we need to put it into context here, its an offence but not rape but some silly judge went to town on her.

The teacher made a decision to have a relationship with a student. Bad call. They waited until he turned 16 to do the bold thing (Jesus Christ, what WAS she thinking! Sex with a 16yo young fella must be awful). Legal age of consent is 17, it wouldn't take much to find that out. It's not a state secret FFS.

For once, I think the judge got it right, what she did was illegal because of his age, and immoral because of her position as his teacher. I knew a lad years back who was proper messed up after being groomed & assaulted by a female teacher in secondary school, and he also had to deal with everyone saying he was lucky

We do need to get away from calling this guy a child. How does a child get into a nightclub.
I'm not sure when a guy stops being a child, but I do remember first day in secondary school when our maths teacher walked in to the classroom. Every guy in the room started shifting uncomfortably, then the school secretary walked in, I think a few guys creamed their pants. By the age of 16, we were certainly young adults and thinking about get laid at every opportunity, I don't think anyone would have called us children.
Nowadays I see in the parents shop, young guys and girls buying condoms, many of them are too young to buy cigarettes, but they are buying condoms and it is illegal for them to have sex.
