This is one of the best artices on this that I have seen - she clearly looked past the PR of the loudest organisations.
The question is, what can be done? She talks about the dialogues that need to take place, and that sex workers need to be at the centre of those dialogues, but I struggle to picture how things get moved in the riight direction. A major battle was lost, and it was not even close - all of the major parties supported the bill, and it sailed through easily. I don't think there is any realistic hope of the laws, north or south, being reversed or diluted, especially after the sad death of brave Laura Lee.
Thankfully, police on both sides of the border seem to be leaving the "respectable" business largely alone. They have an understanding of the realities that politicians never will (except those who are clients!).
Beyond taking opportunities to present a truer picture, as she has done, and to report any instances of girls we encounter who may need help, is there anything we can do, other than continuing to support independent ladies?

I fully agree, excellent article and it continues a slow but steady change in the tide of opinion on this important issue. The key points regarding the increased dangers for sex workers echo the
findings of the Canadian Supreme Court, The House of Commons Judicial Committee and also a legal opinion given to SWAI by Senior Council in the run up to the introduction of the law. It is very clear to me
that if this matter ever comes before the Irish Supreme Court it is likely to be found partly or wholly unconstitutional. This I believe is one reason why the Gardai and PSNI are slow to enforce the legislation.
It is reasonable to assume that many sex workers are having their human rights infringed as a result of Fitzgerald's Law.

I signed a petition earlier against similar legislation been introduced in the UK. Maybe they will listen, maybe not. But at least it's worth a try.
Hello darkness my old friend.....

Thanks for the link.
Sadly the great ladies have been let down by our state and society.
Whether through ignorance or a type of peer pressure society just wants to shun the escort profession making it a far harder enviroment to work in being more at risk and some clients demanding services the ladies here do not wish to provide.
Having to reduce their prices due to less clients etc is just the tip of the iceberg regarding the difficulties and risks the law change has brought on.

All of the above plus not having the courage to speak against the status quo. And unfortunately it will remain that way until someone with the authority, courage and the voice stands up and makes people realise that consensual prostitution and human trafficking are not mutually exclusive.

Despite their new law government policy continues to create sex workers. I have been propositioned a 3 times in the last month by ladies not into advertised sexwork. Once by a young mother and twice be college students.
There hasn't been an increase in the student grant in years, and the qualifying income hasn't been index linked since sometime around 10 years ago. More students are "selling tricks" than ever before, just to make ends meet.
And with the homeless crisis, people are doing what they have to to keep a roof over their heads and food in their bellies.
If they really want to reduce prostitution, they need to tackle the root cause and put some money in the pockets of those most vulnerable.

My wife caught me wearing ladies underwear and threatened to leave me.
So I packed up all her clothes
And left.
