Default Irish Sunday Times Article on The Actual Implementation of That Insane Law

Norma Costello, who has done a number of decent real world articles on the insane new law, had a piece in last week's Irish Edition of The Sunday Times.

Behind a paywall, but you can read it, if you register -

Apparently the gardaí since the introduction of the new law, made 2 arrests and subsequently sent the files to The DPP, which have got absolutely nowhere, as the escorts will not go to court!

'Gardai have sent only two files to the director of public prosecutions (DPP) under a law passed last year to criminalise the purchase of sex. The 2017 Sexual Offences Act — which introduced the so-called Nordic model — criminalises the “punter” without targeting those selling sex.

Under the law, women must be willing to participate in court proceedings against their clients'

Also, the gardaí appear to realize one of the very real negative consequences of it -

'Gardai sources also claim the force is missing out on valuable tip-offs from punters about trafficked women, because men are afraid they may be prosecuted.'

The lovely Ruth Breslin of Ruhama, believes the law isn't being implemented properly -

'Ruth Breslin from Ruhama said the law was not being implemented properly, but she believes that women are reporting violent crimes, despite the lack of cases being sent to the DPP. “What we have noticed since the passage of the law is some emerging evidence that women in prostitution seem more willing to report violent crimes committed against them in the context of prostitution'

    The article added -

“Sex workers in the Republic have reported 54% more crime to uglymugs.ie in the year to March 26 compared with the previous year,” it said. “Violent crime specifically is up 77%.”
    Ride them on the beaches!
