We have moved on but some scars remain.
I'm sure it was whoseyourdaddy — I have no idea about what things were like where Sherry grew up. But there were a couple of comments previously blaming the Catholic religion for our shyness — frankly the catholic religion did not have any impact on me or my peers when I was growing up. That was the point I was making.

They have access to a lot more information than we did. I still remember the abject terror of going into Eason's to buy playboy magazine the first edition after the ban was lifted! 1996 I think it was.

I was only interested in the articles, of course...

I don't agree. The level of teenage depression and suicide here is horrendous.

But the religious influence overall is what people are getting at. Certain publications were banned, movies censored, and the media was certainly influenced.

This has a knock on effect.

Of course people are shy, when Peig is what we're studying in school, and women are almost as covered as the Saudis, compared to eastern, central Europe where the weather means swimsuits and deep tans for large parts of the year.... erm... What was I saying again???

Lithuania has a far worse problem with suicide, I believe.

Sometimes people mistake manners or indifference or circumspection for shyness.
Personally the Catholic church (or any other religion, spirituality /hokum ), had any influence on me nor held any interest for me, since I was 7 or 8.
But religion and some amount of religious repression did have a big influence in Ireland up to fairly recent times.
