He wouldn't be running as an independent, he'd be running with the party he belongs to. The democrats don't really count Sanders as one of them, they've said as much openly during the primaries.

The 'lesser of two evils' option is what has American politics in the sorry state it's in, if half the people who are using their vote to keep the other candidate out were to instead use that vote for a third option that hasn't yet been bought out by corporate interests then there would be a revolution in American politics.

And what's to say those Trump supporters who are really just anti-Clinton supporters wouldn't follow suit?

Money talks and when it speaks, it has an American accent.

    Realpolitik.

Jill Stein seems to suggest a transferable vote (a bit like our prop. representation) for a third candidate so as not to split the vote . Couldn't see either the GOP or the Democratic Party buying into that, so a non starter, A third candidate is highly unlikely to ever get elected so would have the effect of drawing votes from one or other main candidates, in this case presumably Clinton and thus favouring Bush. In effect a slightly left wing third presidential candidate, would end up as a proxy election agent for Trump.

Of course they won't buy into it, the plurality would expose them.
Sanders, instead of kowtowing to party bosses, could use his momentum and substantial political capital to force a viable third option, something that a large enough percentage of the American populace seem hungry for.

    Is that not realpolitik?

No, idealistic politics(by definition, the opposite of Realpolitik) , nice if it happened but for. a third candidate to come anywhere close to winning, would be a bit like Leicester City winning the Premier League. Fairy tales coming true are few and far apart.
A third candidate probably would have a better chance than usual, this time, with so many disliking Clinton and Trump.
