Thirty-two bridgeplaying foreigners, including British, Swedish, Norwegian and Australian citizens, were arrested by Thai police.
They were not playing for money, but were held for possessing too many playing cards. A 1935 law, the Playing Cards Act, prohibits individuals from possessing more than 120 playing cards.
Thailand's military rulers have vowed to crack down on corruption and crime.
The players were released on bail on Thursday, after 12 hours in custody.
An 84-year-old Dutch woman was among those held.
Thailand has strict anti-gambling laws, with nearly all forms of gambling prohibited.
What about America?
Gambling /bookmaking mostly illegal, except for Atlantic city, places in Nevada, Indian reservations.
Played into the hands of the Mafia(''numbers'')
just like alcohol prohibition.
I also have some very vague memory of foreign holidaymakers (in Greece maybe) being briefly arrested after prizes awarded in a nightclub raffle were deemed to be breaking some law or other.

Shalom/salaam.
10,000 years of Middle Eastern civilisation and the place is not at peace but rather in pieces.
