As a teenager I remember snogging a few ladies with cold sores, I didn't think they were much more than bad spots at that time, certainly didn't know they were related to herpes until I was around 20. I never had one though, I never even had acne. I often wondered if I had some sort of immunity, I did have some sort of bad viral rash when I was 7 but it was on my elbow, wonder was it connected.
My wife caught me wearing ladies underwear and threatened to leave me.
So I packed up all her clothes
    And left.

She's not an escort. I wouldn't go through with an appointment if an escort had a cold sore. Likewise I wouldn't make an appointment if I had one.

It's someone I've went on a few dates with. When I met her last night she had a cold sore ... which was a bit of a surprise. I believe she caught me frowning in its general direction more than once.

Current most effective treatment is Valtrex .

Get a script from your GP .

As an aside : interestingly , since I did my HPV vaccine in 2011 , never had a cold sore since .

    Coincidence ?? Perhaps not x

Nor would I ever entertain a gent with a cold sore ! I have sent people away from my door !

Ps. It's good to see most people posting are well enough aware of it and the way it works etc.

When dormant , the virus lives in the spinal cord ganglia ; an outbreak is usually initiated by stress ,

sunburn , being sick (cold / flu) , in some women by menstruation setting on , etc. ye guys already covered it all

    xxx

An aspect that hasn't been addressed :

if a woman has a history of HSV infection (Type 1 = 'oral' , or Type 2 = 'genital' Herpes) , usually vaginal birth

will not be an option , as the virus can cause blindness in the baby if infected during delivery .

Also : though there are two 'types' -- Type 1 = Oral , Type 2 = genital herpes , you yourself can easily spread the

virus from one part of your body to another ! You can actually end up with Type 1 on your willy if you touch yourself

let's say go pee after having touched your lips with an active outbreak , without washing your hands first .

OR , can end up with 'genital herpes' on your lips , face , eyes , etc. by self transferring it from one area to another .

I'd recommend looking up some Google images , just to drive the point home xxx

I do not have the virus and hear it can be anything from barely noticable to agony first time round.

Replies have pretty well covered it.
Even though, I was pretty well aware of Hdrpes viruses and how they are transmitted, I once spent time kissing and escort with a cold sore. She was wearing a Zovirax patch(an alternative to the cream). Some time after this I developed a cold sore on the lower lip. Pretty sure I got it from her but I was also sbaring water ottles and using a drinking fountain at the time.
In my case it started as a crack /sore on the lip then developed into a crusty scab lesion that would take a few weeks to clear up. In my case it was not painful but I tend not to feel much from cuts scratcbes anyway.
It recurred 3/4 times in the following year.
In the following two years to infection, on average, there are 6 outbreaks of decreasing severity until the thing settles down until some stress possibly reactivates it.
Moral of the story, no kissing/oral with a cold sore.
That escort almost certainly was doing oral as well so hope she wasn't doing it uncovered.

    Cold sores are extremely contagious.
I am lucky (so far) that, as far as I know, I have never had one.
It is usually stated that most people (about 80% at least) will carry the cold sore virus. This is because it is picked up early in childhood from parents and siblings kissing you. This 80% I suspect is much lower in Ireland probably because most Irish parents are not that affectionate.

If you get the virus you become resistant to it, although it is possible to get it in another part of the body. The virus is eventually overcome by the immune system but it is still there and can reappear if your immune system is low.

I have never seen an escort with a cold sore. Old story, much less likely to get any sort of infection from an escort than from the general population.

But I have been appalled by the casual attitude of some girls, and some ex-girlfriends towards cold sores. You cannot assume (I think especially in Ireland) that everyone has the virus. If you have an active cold sore (and it is active during the “tingle phase” before the sore erupts) and you kiss, even friendly, you will give it to the person you kiss. Some girls will try to kiss (and slabber ) over you when they have an obvious cord sore and take offence when you point this out to them.

Alarmingly, an advertisement on TV for one of these concealment patches shows a girl having a date and then finding out she has a cold sore and using the product and going on the date, the implication is that it is OK if you can conceal a cold sore to just carry on as normal.

As already stated cold sores are highly infectious, neither party should engage in any sexual interaction, including kissing, as the virus is transmitted very easily, until the cold sore has cleared up completely. Personally, I don't suffer from cold sores, never had, so I think as with all viral infections, some people are immune/some people are more prone to certain infections & some people are natural viral carriers, as every virus has an incubation period, some people carry the virus but never display symptons. As this is one of the easiest infections to control, use common sense & avoid all contact.

Wow, quite a lot of information there already. All of it written a lot stronger than i would have put it.

The main thing to point out at this stage is that the virus is not contagious until the sore breaks. The infection is carried by the fluid in the sore, this is why sharing cups etc can transmit the virus. Early treatment of a 'tingle' can sometimes prevent a sore developing, but usually not.

Yes cold sores on the mouth can transmit Type 1 to the genitals, and Type 2 on the genitals can transmit to the mouth during oral.

Outbreaks of sores occur during times of extreme changes of weather as well.

A history of HSV does not necessarily prevent a woman from natural childbirth, it depends on whether the immune system is able to normally suppress the virus or not. Some people find that outbreaks are reoccurring, in which case a STI/GUM/ID clinic in the Republic, might provide you with ongoing medication. Normally, they dont. I dont know about the protocol in Northern Ireland.

I have had type 1 for as long as i can remember, my partners have never got it, but i am careful to use patches and not touch them with my mouth once the sore (blister) has broken.

I got a little one just before Xmas when I wasn't working. It actually appeared and grew as I was driving back to England, the bugger! It was disappointing, because it meant I couldn't kiss my little niece, but good because it meant I didn't have to kiss the oldies in the family. I am lucky that in although I do get them, they never really amount to much and heal quickly and usually an indication that I need a rest, so I listen to my body and do take a break.

Knowledge is power as always and I only wish someone has told my ex's nieces when they were little as they would run at you like mad zombie's with their awful cold sores when we visited and I'd be running in the other direction lol. I'm sure it was one of them that got me!

So it's been over two weeks now and I haven't had any tingles, sores, or weird looking developments around my face-hole. Does that mean I'm in the clear?
