I have had similar experiences. I think part of it is that you never know the circumstances are when a phone is answered - you may have caught them just in the door and flustered, or outside where acoustics are bad. They may not be understanding your accent well, or may not recognise a name.
A couple if times I have felt the phone call to be a bit flat, but found them lovely and friendly in person, so it does not worry me now.
The most experienced girls are good at managing contacts so that they will always know who it is if you have spoken before - it makes a big difference when you get a warm welcome to your call.
