Not sure where you were in England, but it's not something you would hear where I live. There are still pockets of areas that are very 'local' based and any stranger gets a tough time, but they are fewer and fewer. The same goes over here and that could also be a factor. If someone works from the same place and lives there, they don't want to be noticed, so if it is an area where there are only white Irish, anyone out of the norm may be noticed.
If you think that is an over reaction I know of someone who got questioned for having visitors with Dublin plates, as they lived in a loyalist area.
Where I work currently it is very multi cultural, so wouldn't be an issue at all, which is a blessing.
